Dr. Mark Allwood Portillo (he/him) is a Salvadoran-Canadian photographer, filmmaker, musician, and researcher based in Ontario, Canada. His work navigates the intersections of landscape, memory, and human intervention, spanning genres such as street and city photography, new topographics, abstraction, and environmental documentary.

Mark’s current projects include a research-creation study of reclaimed landscapes across Canada and Latin America, a documentary exploring the Latin American diaspora in Canada, and films that examine human-made environments. His artistic practice delves into themes of ruins, decay, environmental hazards, post-human experiences, and the banal, often weaving postcolonial critique with reflections on capitalism and its aftermath.

In addition to his creative work, Mark is a sessional instructor in Trent University’s Cultural Studies program and has previously collaborated with faculty at York University and the Central American University in El Salvador on projects addressing trauma and resilience in post-war Salvadoran society. As a musician, he composes and designs sound for Commander Goznales, an experimental music ensemble pushing the boundaries of sonic expression.
